10 Lessons Learned From Traveling
Traveling has so many lessons to teach us. Every trip you go on you will learn something new. Whether it is big or small you always come back more educated. Here is a list of 10 things that I have learned from my travels that I think are most important.
1.) Be flexible
When you are traveling anything can happen. Flight is delayed, Hotel isn’t what you expected, weather isn’t the greatest, and the list goes on. If you let these things get you upset, or get in your way then that is on you. Laugh it off and make the best of it. Everything happens for a reason. Find a way to make the situation better and roll with it. That is half the fun!
2.) Your phone is not your friend
I don’t think there has ever been a time where I made it through an entire trip where I had service everywhere I needed to, could connect to wifi, or my battery hasn’t died. Relying solely on technology is not a good idea. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Nine times out of ten if you ask someone they will help you. Also, keep hard copies of anything important that you might need just in case!
3.)Don’t let fear get in your way
So many opportunities come about when you meet people. Do not let fear stand in your way. In New Zealand my friend and I started talking to our tour guide at the sky tower. Not only was he able to tell us some awesome things to check out, but when we went back the second time we were able to plan a day together to go see places. We never would have had those adventures if we wouldn’t have met him in the first place. What makes it better is that we are still friends with him to this day. If you honestly feel something is wrong then trust your gut, but don’t miss out just because your afraid.
4.) At least try the food
I am a very picky eater but one thing I love to do is try new foods when I travel. I don’t always like it, but at least I know I gave it a shot. Sometimes, you may be pleasantly surprised!
5.) Traveling changes who you are
Every time I come back from a trip I can tell something about me changes. When you are put in a situation that takes you out of your comfort zone and forces you to adapt, it changes you. When you learn new things or meet new people it gives you a whole new sense of appreciation for how big the world truly is.
6.) It’s a test
Want to see if a relationship is going to work out or not go on a small trip. It is a test for you and for them to see how well people can work together and how they adapt to certain situations.
7.)Photos are not the same
I can not say this enough, there is no way a photo can truly capture what is really going on. I will never forget the feeling the first time I saw Mount St. Helens or Crater Lake. People told me about them, but they just weren’t things that I was truly interested in seeing. I saw pictures and figured maybe one day I’d go. Boy was I wrong. Seeing Mount St. Helens took my breath away. It was absolutely beautiful, and Crater lake you can’t even imagine how big it is until you are standing there experiencing it for yourself.
8.) Your life is how you want it to be
Your life goes how you want it to go. If you are content with going through the motions of the same daily routine, then that is what is going to continue to happen. If you decide you want something to change, then only you can make it happen. I want to be able to work my forty hours a week, and travel any chance that I get. That is what I intend to do. I make it happen. Whether you have a good day or a bad day, the world keeps moving. Make the best of what you are given, change what you don’t like, and enjoy what you are doing. Life is to short to be anything but happy.
9.) You don’t need to take your entire closest
I do not need to pack a different swim suit for every day I am away at the beach. I do not need to pack multiple outfits for every single day. Not only does over packing making it harder to get around, it just creates a bigger mess and makes everything a lot more difficult. Not to mention it is a lot more laundry when you get home.
10.) Travel Travel Travel
A mind that is stretched by new experiences can never go back to its old dimensions. -Oliver Wendell Holmes
